Questa pianta di origine nord-americana si è naturalizzata in diverse regioni. Il Pignatti non segnala la sua presenza in Puglia, ma queste foto dimostrano che essa è invece presente anche nel Salento.

Il genere Amaranthus comprende circa 60 specie presenti nelle aree tropicali e temperate. Alcune sono coltivate come piante ornamentali, ma altre sono infestanti. Le foglie, ricche di proteine, sono state utilizzate per millenni come verdura nelle aree tropicali, anche se alcune specie possono accumulare livelli tossici di nitrati.
